The Global Dreamers Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making international travel more accessible for young Americans by sponsoring the cost for new passport applications and further travel experiences.
A new US passport is $145, plus a little extra for passport photos. I am starting this travel scholarship because never in my wildest dreams did I ever believe I would be fortunate enough to travel. Traveling wasn’t for someone “like me.”
My family didn’t travel. People in my neighborhood didn’t travel. In fact, I can’t think of ONE person I knew growing up that had been out of the country. Barely anyone left Los Angeles.
When I was in 11th grade, my (super fancy) high school (that I had to lie to get into) was offering a Spring Break trip to France for all third year French students. I really didn’t want to go. I wasn’t all that great at French. I didn’t have any close friends in the class. I needed to spend Spring Break working. And – probably the biggest factor – I didn’t have the money.
But for some reason, that I do not fully comprehend to this day, a tiny voice inside of me told me to go anyway. And I listened.
I had no idea that it would completely change my life.
It all started with getting a passport.
